Organized one day Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) activity under SERB-DST funded Project

 

 

 

 

ICAR-DOGR, Pune, organized a one-day Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) activity on 10/01/2024 as a component of the research project "Tapping the potential of native stingless bee Tetragonula iridipennis Smith for pollination enhancement and profitable onion seed production," funded by SERB-DST, New Delhi (PI of the Project: Dr. Karuppaiah V, Sr. Scientist). Twenty-five students pursuing B.Sc. in Botany and Zoology from Hutatma Rajguru College, Rajgurunagar, Pune, engaged in this event. The proceedings commenced with a pledge ceremony, followed by a warm welcome extended to the students and the distinguished guest, Dr. Kirti Nitnaware (Head of Department) of Hutatma Rajguru College, Rajgurunagar, Pune, by Dr. Kalyani Gorrepati, Sr. Scientist at ICAR-DOGR. The purpose of this activity at the PI Institute was to foster a dynamic research culture among college students, integrating both scientific rigor and social responsibility. In this programme, the students were guided through ICAR-DOGR's research laboratories, introduced to the research facilities, experimental fields, and apiary colony, and provided with information regarding all ongoing research programs conducted at ICAR-DOGR. Additionally, two lectures were presented during the visit: 1. A session on the types of honey bees and their significance in pollination delivered by Mr. Chandrashekhar Pote, Junior Research Fellow, ICAR-DOGR, and 2. An introduction to bees and beekeeping presented by Mr. Dhananjay Shirsat, Junior Research Fellow, ICAR-DOGR. During the research experience visit to ICAR-DOGR, students gained insights into the ongoing research activities and the research facilities housed at the ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research in Pune. The program concluded with a vote of thanks offered by Dr. Kalyani Gorrepati, Sr. Scientist, ICAR-DOGR, Pune.
