Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during late kharif 2011-12 at Research field, College of Horticulture, Mandsaur. Fifteen treatment combinations comprising of three varieties (Agrifound Dark Red (ADR) (V1), Bhima Super (V2), Bhima Red (V3) and five nitrogen levels (0 (N1), 60 (N2), 90 (N3), 120 (N4) and 150 (N5) kg/ha) were laid in factorial randomized block design with three replications. The results revealed significant effect of varieties on growth and yield parameters. ADR (V1) showed maximum plant height, number of leaves and dry weight of shoot per plant followed by Bhima Super (V2) and Bhima Red (V3). Polar and equatorial diameters of bulbs, average bulb weight and total bulb yield were significantly higher in ADR (V1) compared to Bhima Super (V2) and Bhima Red (V3). Quality parameters like neck thickness and total soluble solids (TSS) varied significantly with cultivars. Maximum neck thickness was observed in ADR (V1) followed by Bhima Super (V2) and Bhima Red (V3), whereas, TSS content in ADR (V1) was at par with Bhima Super (V2). Nitrogen application significantly affected growth parameters, yield, yield parameters, yield and quality attributes. Plant height, number of leaves per plant and shoot dry weight were increased with increasing nitrogen level from 0 to 150 kg N/ha. The highest polar diameter and equatorial diameter of bulb, average bulb weight and total bulb yield were recorded in 150kg N/ha (N5) applied plot. Application of 150 kg N/ha showed the highest neck thickness and TSS.
