Study on Local Methods of Storage in Some Allium Species in India

Abstract

Local methods used for storage of some Allium species in India are discussed to facilitate availability of quality material for various research programmes and in use after post-harvest. In this paper the authors have made an attempt to provide the applicability of low-cost indigenous methods used for conserving some Allium species based on information primarily gathered through the experimental plots, farmers' field and market survey while working on this group for past three years. These methods are not only cost effective but can facilitate quality collection; besides local procedures for some underutilized Allium species in India will benefit the subsistence farmers for their economic enhancement. Information on disease prevalence in some areas can facilitate pre-collection strategy for research purpose.
