Studies on Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance in Garlic (Allium sativum L.)

Abstract


Garlic is an important vegetatively propagated spice crop. Therefore, study of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance among genotypes will definitely facilitate the scope for selection of traits. Thus, the present investigation was carried out at the Vegetable Research Station, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, during rabi 2012 to study the field performance and genetic variation of 260 germplasms of garlic (Allium sativum L.) collected from different parts of India. The analysis of variance revealed significant difference among the genotypes for all the 13 traits, namely plant height, pseudo stem height, pseudo stem diameter, days to maturity, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, bulb polar diameter, bulb equatorial diameter, number of cloves per bulb, weight of 10 bulb cloves, bulb yield and T.S.S., pseudo stem diameter and leaf width indicated greater variability in the germplasms. In general, estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) were found higher in magnitude than corresponding genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV). Characters pseudo stem diameter and leaf width showed the higher phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation among all the characters. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for pseudo stem diameter, pseudo stem height and bulb yield per plant suggesting additive gene action that can be improved through direct selection.
